Nirav Shah, the former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has become the first Democrat to qualify for Maine's U.S. Senate race. He will challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Shah's entry into the race marks a significant development in the contest for the Senate seat. As the first Democrat to officially qualify, he will face Collins, who has held the seat since 1997.

Shah served as the director of the Maine CDC during the COVID-19 pandemic, gaining statewide recognition for his leadership. His campaign is expected to focus on public health and other issues.

The primary election is scheduled for June 2026, with the general election to follow in November 2026.
