Patel's aircraft was already on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews on Friday, July 10, 2026, when he received the summons and called off the trip. The White House has not disclosed the reason for the last-minute directive.

The canceled visit was to include a public appearance at a concert in Chicago, according to planning documents reviewed by NRI Herald. The event was intended to highlight community engagement efforts by the FBI.

This is the second time in recent weeks that Patel's travel plans have been disrupted. Earlier in June, a scheduled trip to Detroit was postponed without explanation, though officials at the time cited scheduling conflicts.

The White House summons has fueled speculation about tensions between the FBI director and the administration. Patel, who was appointed in 2025, has faced criticism from both political parties over his handling of sensitive investigations.

An FBI spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of the summons, saying only that Patel remains focused on the bureau's mission. The Chicago event has not been rescheduled.
