‘Offensive, ignorant, and beneath president’s dignity’: Indian-American lawmakers slam Trump’s ‘hellhole’ repost

Indian-American lawmakers have sharply criticized former President Donald Trump for reposting a social media message that referred to India as a 'hellhole.' The lawmakers described the repost as 'offensive, ignorant, and beneath president's dignity.'

The repost, which Trump shared on his social media platform, drew immediate backlash from members of the Indian-American community and elected officials. Several lawmakers issued statements denouncing the language and calling for an apology.

Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Indian-American Democrat from Illinois, said the comment was 'deeply disrespectful' to the Indian people and the strong ties between the United States and India. He urged Trump to retract the statement and show respect for a key ally.

Other Indian-American lawmakers, including Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington, echoed similar sentiments. Jayapal called the repost 'racist and xenophobic' and said it undermined the values of inclusivity and diplomacy.

The controversy comes amid ongoing diplomatic relations between the U.S. and India, with both countries cooperating on trade, defense, and technology. Critics argue that such remarks could damage bilateral ties and alienate the Indian-American community, which is one of the fastest-growing immigrant groups in the United States.
