Teacher Wins $287K Settlement Over Charlie Kirk Social Media Row

Michelle Mickens, a former teacher at a Houston-area school, agreed to the settlement with the Spring Independent School District in October, according to court records. The district did not admit wrongdoing as part of the deal.

Mickens was placed on leave in 2021 after she commented on social media about Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Her posts criticized Kirk's views on race and education, and she faced an investigation that led to a written reprimand and a transfer to a different campus.

In her lawsuit, filed in federal court, Mickens argued that the district violated her First Amendment rights by punishing her for speech made outside of work hours and off school property. She also claimed the district's actions caused emotional distress and damaged her professional reputation.

The settlement covers back pay, attorney's fees, and other damages. Mickens's lawyer said the agreement allows her to move forward and that the district has revised its social media policy to better protect employees' free speech rights.

The case drew national attention as it touched on the boundaries of teachers' online expression and the influence of political figures in school communities. Mickens no longer works for the district.
