EU migration pact takes effect June 12 with 7-day border screenings and fast-track rejections.
The European Union's new migration pact will take effect on June 12, introducing stricter border procedures as anti-immigrant sentiment rises across the bloc. The rules mandate seven-day screenings at external borders, including biometric data collection, and allow for fast-track rejections of asylum claims from nationalities with low approval rates.
Under the pact, most irregular entrants will face accelerated processing near the border rather than being moved to interior states. For example, applicants from Bangladesh, which has an 80% denial rate, could be quickly turned away.
The measures aim to reduce secondary movements within the EU and speed up deportations. Critics argue the rules may violate asylum rights, while supporters say they are necessary to manage migration flows.
