U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, Virginia state Senator Suhas Subramanyam, and Michigan state Representative Shri Thanedar are urging Indian Americans to pursue political careers. The three lawmakers made the appeal during a virtual event organized by the Indian American Impact Fund.
Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois' 8th Congressional District, said that Indian Americans need to have a seat at the table where decisions are made. He emphasized that the community should not just be content with professional success but should also engage in civic leadership.
Subramanyam, the first Indian American elected to the Virginia Senate, noted that representation matters and that Indian American voices can bring unique perspectives to policy discussions. He encouraged young Indian Americans to consider running for local offices as a starting point.
Thanedar, who serves in the Michigan House, stressed the importance of building a pipeline of Indian American candidates. He said that the community has the resources and talent to make a significant impact in politics and should not hesitate to step forward.
The event was part of a broader effort by the Indian American Impact Fund to increase political participation among Indian Americans. The organization provides training, funding, and networking opportunities for potential candidates.
