The earthquake struck at 5:42 a.m. local time on Wednesday, with its epicenter located approximately 100 kilometers east of Visakhapatnam in the Bay of Bengal, according to the National Center for Seismology.

Residents in Visakhapatnam and nearby coastal areas reported feeling light shaking for a few seconds, but there were no immediate reports of structural damage or injuries.

The tremor was recorded at a depth of 30 kilometers, which is relatively shallow and can cause more noticeable shaking near the epicenter, though the offshore location reduced its impact on land.

Officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority said they were monitoring the situation and urged residents to remain calm, as aftershocks are unlikely but possible.

The event is the latest in a series of minor earthquakes in the region, which lies in a seismically active zone, though earthquakes of this magnitude rarely cause significant damage.
