Two Indian American cardiologists from Duke University have assumed top leadership positions at the American Heart Association, the organization announced. Dr. Sana M. Al-Khatib was elected president, and Dr. Manesh R. Patel was named president-elect.
Al-Khatib, a professor of medicine at Duke, specializes in cardiac electrophysiology and heart rhythm disorders. Patel, also a Duke professor, focuses on cardiovascular imaging and preventive cardiology. Both have extensive research backgrounds and have served in various AHA roles previously.
