Bay Area Indian Community Celebrates Student 'Cockroach' Party Victory

The celebration, held at a community hall in Fremont, drew several hundred attendees who cheered speeches, waved Indian flags, and shared stories of the protests that began on university campuses across India.

Organizers said the event was a show of solidarity with the student movement, which they described as a victory for democratic expression. The protests, led by the Cockroach Janta Party, a student collective named in jest, gained momentum over several weeks before Pradhan resigned.

Community leaders in the Bay Area, many of whom are alumni of Indian universities, said they had followed the events closely through social media and family connections. Some said they had contributed to fundraising efforts for student activists.

The Fremont gathering included cultural performances and a panel discussion on the role of the Indian diaspora in supporting social movements back home. Organizers said they planned to hold similar events in other U.S. cities with large Indian populations.

The resignation of Pradhan, who had faced criticism for his handling of education policy, was seen by protesters as a major concession. The CJP has said it will continue to press for reforms in higher education.
