Microsoft is eliminating about 4,000 jobs, or 2.1% of its global workforce, in a new round of layoffs that also includes a major restructuring of its Xbox gaming division. The cuts come months after the company reduced its workforce by approximately 6,000 positions in May, bringing the total number of jobs cut this year to around 10,000.

Company executives said the reductions are aimed at simplifying management layers, improving efficiency, and redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence infrastructure and strategic growth areas. Microsoft has committed tens of billions of dollars to expand its data center network and AI capabilities for products including Copilot and Azure AI services.

Within the gaming business, Xbox is restructuring several game development studios to sharpen its long-term publishing strategy. Some studios will operate more independently, while development priorities will shift toward franchises and projects with stronger commercial potential. The restructuring follows Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which has led to multiple organizational changes including studio closures and workforce reductions.

Microsoft emphasized that gaming remains a strategic business despite the layoffs, with continued investment in first-party game development, cloud gaming, and subscription services such as Game Pass. The job cuts affect employees across multiple business units and geographic regions, and the company said it will provide severance benefits and career transition assistance as required under local employment laws.
