Navneet Kaur, 26, was found with gunshot wounds on Tuesday evening in the city's Rexdale neighbourhood. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Sharnjeet Singh, 37, of Indian descent, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder. He appeared in court on Thursday.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive or the relationship between Kaur and Singh. Investigators are appealing for witnesses and any dashcam or surveillance footage from the area.

The shooting adds to a recent spate of gun violence in Toronto, which has seen a rise in shootings this year. Community leaders have expressed concern over the impact on the city's South Asian population.

Kaur's family has been notified. The Indian consulate in Toronto is providing assistance to the family.
