Trump Airport Immigration Crackdown Detains Visa Overstays

The Trump administration has significantly expanded airport immigration enforcement by increasing collaboration between the Transportation Security Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The crackdown targets individuals with expired visas who are traveling domestically, a major departure from past practices.

Under the new approach, TSA officers at security checkpoints can flag passengers whose visas have expired. ICE agents are then notified and can detain those individuals before they board their flights.

Previously, domestic travel was not a focus for immigration enforcement at airports. The shift allows authorities to intercept visa overstays who might otherwise go undetected while moving within the country.

Civil liberties groups have criticized the expanded enforcement, arguing it could lead to racial profiling and deter immigrants from traveling. The administration defends the policy as necessary to uphold immigration laws.
