The service, which began this month, deploys human-sized robots to perform household and office chores in private residences and workplaces across the city. Each session costs $30 per hour, a rate that undercuts many traditional cleaning services in the area.
Tau Robotics is using the paid service as a data collection opportunity. The robots, which operate in real-world environments, gather information on how they handle dynamic tasks such as navigating cluttered rooms, adjusting to changing layouts, and interacting with various objects. This data will be used to train future autonomous models.
The company has not disclosed how many clients have signed up or how many robots are currently in operation. Invitations are being sent out on a rolling basis, with priority given to early applicants and those in dense residential neighborhoods.
The launch marks a step toward commercializing humanoid robotics, a field that has seen increased investment but few consumer-facing applications. Tau Robotics has not announced plans to expand the service beyond San Francisco.
