Iran held the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday, with huge crowds gathering at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran. State media showed mourners visiting the casket of Khamenei, who was killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes in February, along with caskets of four family members also killed in the strikes.
Mourners wore black and wept openly, with women slapping their heads and men beating their chests in a Shia tradition. The crowd chanted 'Death to America' and carried red signs reading '#KillTrump,' along with red flags symbolizing revenge and yellow flags representing Hezbollah. A large poster depicted President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as wanted men, offering a reward of 100 plots of land for killing them.
Other placards featured images of Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Netanyahu with the words 'There will be blood.' A spokesperson for the funeral preparations said the ceremonies were delayed due to 'the war conditions' and 'the brutal U.S. invasion.'
Khamenei was killed in the first wave of airstrikes, which also reportedly killed 170 people in a school. He was succeeded by his son Mojtaba Khamenei, who media reports said was absent from the public funeral.
