The Italian government has approved a quota of 500,000 work visas to be issued between 2026 and 2028, a move aimed at filling critical labor shortages across multiple sectors. Under the new framework, employers in Italy must first secure a Nulla Osta, or work authorization, from the relevant authorities. Once obtained, this document allows the prospective employee to claim a visa and relocate to Italy for employment. The process is employer-sponsored, meaning that job offers must precede visa applications.

The Italian initiative is part of a broader European effort to redesign labor-migration corridors, such as the India-Germany partnership, to address skills gaps in industries ranging from technology to healthcare. Policymakers are pursuing what they describe as a 'quadruple win' that balances employer needs, worker protections, and benefits for both origin and destination countries.
