Kerala-born Nithya Raman surges into Los Angeles mayoral runoff

Nithya Raman, a city councilmember born in Kerala, India, has advanced to the runoff election for mayor of Los Angeles. The election will determine who leads the second-largest city in the United States.

Raman secured enough votes in the primary to place among the top two candidates, earning a spot in the November runoff. Her campaign focused on housing, homelessness, and public safety issues.

If elected, Raman would become the first Indian American mayor of Los Angeles. She currently represents the city's Fourth Council District, which includes parts of Hollywood and Sherman Oaks.

The runoff election is scheduled for November, when Raman will face the other top vote-getter from the primary. The winner will succeed the current mayor.
