Toyota announced Monday it will invest $3.6 billion to build a new auto plant on its San Antonio manufacturing campus, creating 2,000 jobs and shifting production of its Tacoma pickup truck from Mexico to the United States.
The 2.5-million-square-foot facility is expected to open by 2030. Production of the mid-size Tacoma will move from Toyota's Baja California plant in Mexico to the new Texas plant, a transition that will take about four years, the Japanese automaker said.
The announcement comes days after Washington declined to renew a North American trade pact with Mexico and Canada. In November 2025, Toyota said it planned to invest as much as $10 billion in the United States over five years.
Toyota President and CEO Ted Ogawa said the investment reflects confidence in the region's workforce and long-term growth potential. Toyota will continue building some Tacoma trucks at its Guanajuato, Mexico, plant.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the investment qualifies for a $20 million state grant and other incentives. President Donald Trump has pressed automakers to shift production to the U.S. and imposed higher tariffs on autos, steel, aluminum and parts.
