Uday Ruddarraju, an Indian-origin engineer, has been named Chief Technology Officer of Compute at OpenAI. He previously worked at xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company.

In his new role, Ruddarraju will oversee the construction and operation of data centers worldwide, manage large-scale GPU clusters, and direct semiconductor hardware strategy. The position is critical to supporting the development of OpenAI's next-generation frontier models.

Ruddarraju's appointment signals OpenAI's intensified focus on compute capacity as AI models grow more complex and resource-intensive. The company has been expanding its infrastructure to keep pace with demand for training and deployment.

Before joining xAI, Ruddarraju held engineering roles at major technology firms. His expertise in large-scale systems and hardware optimization is expected to accelerate OpenAI's compute roadmap.
