OpenAI To Revoke SpaceX's Cursor Access In November

OpenAI said Saturday it had notified SpaceX of its intention to wind down the agreement, with a proposed shutoff date of November 12, 2026. The company said it is giving the maximum notice permitted under its contract so developers have as much time as possible to retain access to its models through Cursor.

Writing on X, OpenAI stated: "We're ending our partnership with Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX. Under our proposal, Cursor's direct access to our models would end on November 12. We know that the people most affected by this decision are the developers who rely on OpenAI models in Cursor. We care about their experience in this transition and we're ready to go above and beyond to support them."

OpenAI said the move was difficult because it remains committed to making its models broadly available to developers, but said its experience with Musk's companies has raised concerns about contractual compliance. "We are making this choice because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts," OpenAI said.

The company cited Musk's takeover of Twitter in 2022 as a previous instance that raised concerns. Twitter, now part of SpaceX, previously violated the terms of its agreement with OpenAI, the company said. OpenAI also referenced its upcoming Astra model and said it would not provide future models to Cursor as the agreement moves toward termination.

The dispute adds another chapter to the strained relationship between Musk and OpenAI. Musk was among the early co-founders of OpenAI before leaving and later launching xAI, which competes with OpenAI. OpenAI said its agreement with Cursor includes a limited window to cancel the contract following a change in control, and it has decided to exercise that right at the latest date allowed under the agreement rather than immediately cutting off access.
