U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new State Department initiative that will allow Americans to take and submit passport photos from home using a smartphone or laptop camera.

The program aims to streamline the passport application process by eliminating the need for in-person photo appointments at post offices or retail stores.

Officials said the system will use software to ensure photos meet government standards for lighting, background, and facial expression.

No timeline has been given for when the option will be available, but the department said it is working to implement the change as soon as possible.
