Americans May Soon Submit Passport Photos From Home

Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled the plan on Wednesday, saying the department will roll out the option in the coming months. The move aims to reduce the hassle of visiting a photo studio or post office for passport applications.

Under the new system, applicants will use a smartphone or laptop camera to capture a compliant photo, which they can then upload through the State Department's online portal. The department will use automated software to check the photo against official requirements, such as lighting, background, and facial expression.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize passport services, which have faced backlogs in recent years. Officials said the home photo option will be available for both new applications and renewals, though some applicants may still be required to visit a passport agency if their photo fails automated checks.

A pilot program is expected to begin later this year, with full implementation targeted for 2026. The department did not specify whether there would be an additional fee for the home photo service.
