Amazon challenges SpaceX Starlink with satellite internet push, targets service debut

Amazon is accelerating its Project Kuiper satellite internet initiative, positioning itself as a direct competitor to SpaceX's Starlink service. The company aims to begin offering broadband services to customers globally, challenging Starlink's early lead in the low-Earth orbit satellite internet market.

Project Kuiper involves deploying a constellation of over 3,200 satellites to provide high-speed, low-latency internet access to underserved and remote areas. Amazon has secured launch contracts with multiple providers, including United Launch Alliance and Arianespace, to deploy the satellites over the coming years.

The company plans to start beta testing with external customers by late 2024 or early 2025, pending successful satellite launches and regulatory approvals. Amazon has invested billions of dollars into the project and has already launched two prototype satellites to test its technology.

SpaceX's Starlink currently has over 5,000 satellites in orbit and serves more than 2 million subscribers worldwide. Amazon's entry into the market is expected to increase competition, potentially driving down prices and expanding access to satellite internet services.
