FBI Investigates 26 Federal Plaza Explosion; Former Army Soldier Detained

Andrew Arrabaca, 43, was taken into custody in connection with the blast that occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2026, outside 26 Federal Plaza, which houses federal offices including the FBI's New York field office. Authorities described the incident as an 'anti-government attack.'

The explosion caused minor injuries to two bystanders, who were treated at the scene and released. No fatalities were reported. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation, with assistance from the New York Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Arrabaca, a resident of New Jersey, served in the U.S. Army for six years and was honorably discharged in 2005, according to military records. His motive remains under investigation, but officials said they are examining his online activity and personal writings for potential extremist ties.

The area around 26 Federal Plaza was cordoned off for several hours as bomb squad technicians and evidence teams combed the scene. Federal offices in the building were evacuated and remained closed for the day. Normal operations are expected to resume Tuesday morning.

Arrabaca is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn pending a federal court appearance. He faces charges of using an explosive device to damage federal property, which carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
