Reliance and Rolls-Royce Partner for AMCA Fighter Jet Engine

The proposed collaboration, announced on Monday, will explore the design, development, manufacturing, and delivery of a sovereign combat engine for the AMCA programme. It also includes plans for a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India, which would focus on power and propulsion technology across the entire engine development cycle, from design to through-life support.

The partnership guarantees India full intellectual property rights for the 120kN engine, a key demand for New Delhi. This directly challenges France's Safran, which has been competing for the lucrative defense contract. The deal is seen as a significant step toward reducing India's reliance on foreign engine makers for its fifth-generation fighter jet.

Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, emphasized the importance of sovereign capability in critical technologies for India's strategic autonomy. He said the partnership would combine Rolls-Royce's advanced propulsion expertise with Reliance's manufacturing scale and execution capabilities to build an enduring national capability.

The companies also said the partnership could open doors to wider cooperation in defense, civil aerospace, and new power and propulsion systems, potentially making India a global hub for advanced engine technology.
