Rice University junior Prasi Desai wins Goldwater Scholarship

Rice University junior Prasi Desai has been named a recipient of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, the premier undergraduate award for students pursuing research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Desai is one of approximately 400 scholars selected nationwide from a pool of over 1,200 nominees.

The Goldwater Scholarship, established by Congress in 1986, honors Senator Barry Goldwater and aims to foster the next generation of research scientists. Recipients are chosen based on academic merit and research potential. Desai, a student in the School of Engineering, has demonstrated exceptional promise in his field.

Desai's research focuses on developing computational models to study biological systems. He has worked in the lab of Dr. Amina Qutub, an associate professor of bioengineering, where he contributed to projects involving machine learning and cellular dynamics. His academic achievements include a near-perfect GPA and multiple honors.

The scholarship provides up to $7,500 per year for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Desai plans to pursue a Ph.D. in bioengineering after completing his undergraduate degree. He expressed gratitude for the support from his mentors and the Rice community.

Rice University has a strong track record of Goldwater recipients, with Desai being the latest in a series of students recognized for their research excellence. The award underscores the university's commitment to fostering undergraduate research and innovation.
