The rally took place outside Building 40 on Google's main campus, where union members and supporters gathered holding signs and chanting. The petition calls on CEO Sundar Pichai to commit to no involuntary layoffs for the remainder of 2025 and to provide minimum severance of 16 weeks for any future cuts.
Union organizers said the petition reflects growing anxiety among workers after multiple rounds of layoffs in 2023 and 2024 that eliminated thousands of positions. They argue that Google's record profits should allow the company to protect its workforce rather than resort to job cuts.
A Google spokesperson said the company regularly reviews its priorities and makes changes to ensure it is set up for long-term success, but did not comment directly on the petition's demands. The spokesperson noted that affected employees receive support including severance, outplacement services, and immigration assistance.
The Alphabet Workers Union, which represents a small fraction of Google's global workforce, has been pushing for more worker input into corporate decisions. The group has previously organized walkouts over issues including pay equity and contract worker treatment.
