CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on X, noting that Gemini is the fourteenth Google platform to reach the billion-user mark. He credited Josh Woodward and the entire Gemini team for the achievement.

The figure applies specifically to the Gemini app and does not include AI users from other Google channels. The company has been integrating Gemini across Search, Workspace, Android, and its standalone app, with AI Search mode also reaching over one billion monthly active users globally.

Google continues to roll out new features, including Gemini 3.5 Flash, which aims to improve coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks. Usage data shows that 63% of Gemini users interact via voice, and the app generates more than 150 million images daily.

Josh Woodward, Google's VP, noted that students are using AI for schoolwork, with 38% of school-related requests including attachments. Google plans to release new study tools in the coming weeks. Woodward also mentioned that businesses use the Nano Banana images for marketing, though many are likely memes and jokes.

Google benefits from virtually every Android phone shipping with the Gemini app, while over 100 million of its monthly active users are on iOS, where the app must be downloaded manually. The milestone comes amid investor scrutiny over Alphabet's delayed launch of Gemini 3.5 Pro and questions about turning AI investments into sustainable growth.
