Google Gemini Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users, Pichai Announces

CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on X, noting that Gemini is the 14th Google platform to reach the billion-user mark. He credited Josh Woodward and the Gemini team for the achievement, saying 'much more to come.'

The figure applies specifically to the Gemini app, not to AI features across Google's other products. However, Google has been integrating Gemini into Search, Workspace, and Android, and its AI Search mode also has over one billion monthly users globally.

Google is continuing to expand Gemini's capabilities, including the recent launch of Gemini 3.5 Flash, which is aimed at improving coding and autonomous AI-agent tasks. The company also shared usage data: 63% of Gemini users interact via voice, and the app generates more than 150 million images daily.

Josh Woodward, Google's vice president, said that students are a significant user group, with 38% of school-related requests including attachments. Google plans to release new study tools in the coming weeks to support this. He also noted that businesses use the Nano Banana image feature for marketing materials, though many images are likely memes and jokes.

Gemini's growth is aided by its pre-installation on virtually all Android phones, while more than 100 million of its monthly active users are on iOS, where they must manually download the app. The milestone comes as Alphabet faces investor scrutiny over delays in the flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro model, raising questions about the company's ability to convert its AI investments into sustainable growth.
