Illinois Tech Gets UGC Nod for Mumbai Campus Launch

The University Grants Commission's Letter of Approval allows Illinois Institute of Technology to establish a campus in Mumbai, marking a milestone for US higher education in India. The approval follows the UGC's 2022 regulations permitting foreign universities to set up campuses in India.

Illinois Tech plans to offer undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, computing, and business, with initial courses expected to begin in 2025. The Mumbai campus will operate in collaboration with a local partner, though the institute has not yet disclosed the partner's name.

The approval process involved a detailed review of Illinois Tech's academic standards, faculty qualifications, and financial stability. The UGC's decision aligns with India's National Education Policy 2020, which encourages international collaboration in higher education.

Illinois Tech President Rajiv Vaidya stated that the Mumbai campus will provide Indian students access to a US-style education without leaving the country. The institute also plans to offer scholarships and exchange programs to foster cross-cultural learning.

The move is expected to increase competition among Indian universities and other foreign institutions seeking to enter the Indian market. Several other US and UK universities have expressed interest in setting up campuses in India, but Illinois Tech is the first to receive official approval.
