Indian American Student Arjun Aravind Charged with Murder

Arjun Aravind, a 17-year-old from Acton, Massachusetts, was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14. The bodies were discovered Tuesday evening at the family's home on Martha Lane after a tutor arriving for an appointment could not get in and contacted the boys' father, who then called police.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said investigators found that Aravind had been using ChatGPT to explore fictional and theoretical stories about killing family members, including creating 'Gothic novel' narratives. Ryan emphasized that authorities have not said the AI tool caused or directly led to the killings, but the discovery has intensified public concern about how generative AI can be used by troubled individuals.

Police located Aravind early Wednesday morning in Wayland, driving his mother's Honda Accord, and took him into custody without incident. In addition to the murder charges, he faces counts of assault and battery on a family or household member, assault and battery, use of a vehicle without authority, and theft of a motor vehicle.

The case has prompted school officials to respond. Acton-Boxborough Regional School District Superintendent Peter Light called the incident a horrific tragedy and said counselors and mental health staff would be available for students and employees.

Aravind was initially arraigned in Lowell Juvenile Court on vehicle-related charges. Because juvenile court lacks jurisdiction over murder charges, he is expected to be arraigned on those charges in Concord District Court. The state's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not yet determined the exact causes and manners of death.
