Williams, a Hawaii-based cinematographer, underwent surgery to remove a rare tumor called sacral chordoma, which had developed on his tailbone. Doctors are confident the cancerous tissue was removed, but he now faces physical therapy to relearn walking and a long-term schedule of regular scans.
Gabbard, who resigned as director of national intelligence in May to support her husband, described the ordeal as difficult. Williams has refused narcotic pain medication during his recovery, she said in a video shared with CBS News.
The diagnosis came after Williams sought medical attention for persistent back pain. Gabbard announced her resignation on May 22, saying she could not ask him to face the cancer battle alone while she remained in a demanding government position. Her resignation took effect June 30.
Sacral chordoma is a rare cancer that develops in the bones of the lower spine and pelvis. Treatment often involves complex surgery and long-term monitoring due to the tumor's location.
Gabbard, the first Hindu American elected to Congress in 2012, married Williams in 2015 in a traditional Vedic Hindu ceremony. Her recent comments offer a personal glimpse into her family's life, away from her political career.
