The screenings will be integrated into the Periodic Health Assessment, the military's routine annual physical exam. Service members under 30 can request voluntary testing, according to the Pentagon's announcement.

Men's health experts welcomed the move, saying it could help identify low testosterone levels that are often undiagnosed. Low testosterone, or hypogonadism, can cause fatigue, depression, and reduced muscle mass, and it has been linked to higher risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The program applies to both active-duty and reserve component members. Hegseth, who has emphasized military readiness, said the screenings would support the health and performance of the force.

The announcement did not specify a timeline for implementation or details on how the screenings would be administered, but officials said further guidance would be issued to the services.

Experts noted that while routine screening for all men over 30 is not universally recommended, the military's unique operational demands may justify a broader approach. They also stressed the importance of follow-up care for those who are diagnosed with low testosterone.
