NJ Indian-origin teen interviewed about Mount Lafayette hike news

The group, all from New Jersey, was reported overdue on Saturday evening after they failed to return from the mountain, which is part of the Franconia Range in the White Mountains. Search and rescue teams from New Hampshire Fish and Game located the hikers after dark and guided them to safety.

The teenagers had summited Mount Lafayette without headlamps, sufficient food, or proper cold-weather clothing, according to officials. They were not carrying any emergency gear, and their lack of preparation made the rescue operation more hazardous for the teams involved.

Under New Hampshire law, hikers who require rescue due to negligence can be billed for the costs of the operation. The state's Fish and Game Department has the authority to seek reimbursement for expenses, which can run into thousands of dollars depending on the complexity of the mission.

Officials reminded hikers to carry essential items, including a map, compass, flashlight, extra food, and warm layers, even for day hikes. They also urged hikers to check weather forecasts and turn back if conditions or daylight become a concern.

The teens were unharmed and did not require medical attention, but the incident serves as a cautionary tale for those venturing into the backcountry without adequate preparation.
