NYC India Day Parade 2026: Celebrating Indian Independence

New York City's India Day Parade, a centerpiece of the August India Fest celebrations, drew thousands of attendees on Sunday with floats, marching bands, and performances representing diverse regional traditions.

Organizers said the parade, now in its 45th year, highlighted the growing visibility of the Indian American community, with participation from local schools, businesses, and community groups.

Beyond New York, similar events unfolded in cities like Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco, featuring ethnic fashion shows, traditional dance, and food stalls offering regional cuisines.

The festivities come as Indian Americans play an increasingly prominent role in U.S. public life. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during a recent visit to Chicago, met with community leaders and credited the diaspora with strengthening India's global standing and soft power.

Organizers expect the celebrations to continue through the month, with smaller community gatherings planned in the coming weeks.
