Indian Diaspora Tops 3M In US, Canada Rises As Europe Tightens Rules

The number of Indian-born residents in the United States reached 3.17 million in 2024, according to new data. Canada hosted 1.02 million, making North America home to one in four Indian migrants worldwide.

The US figure has grown more than sevenfold since 1990, reflecting the region's rising importance as a destination for Indian migrants alongside West Asia. The United Kingdom remains the largest European host with 1.04 million Indian-born residents.

The data highlight a contrast between established migration flows to North America and evolving policies in Europe. Researchers are examining how institutional settings and labor rules in European countries shape skilled migration from India.

The figures underscore the growing concentration of the Indian diaspora in North America, even as European nations implement tighter immigration regulations.
