Indian Diaspora Tops 3M In US, Canada Rises As Europe Tightens Rules

The United States remains the top destination for Indian migrants, hosting 3.17 million Indian-born residents in 2024, according to new data. Canada follows with 1.02 million, and together the two countries now account for one in four Indian migrants worldwide.

The US figure has grown more than sevenfold since 1990, when the Indian-born population stood at about 450,000. Canada's numbers have also climbed steadily, reflecting a shift in migration patterns toward North America.

The rise comes as European nations tighten immigration rules, making it harder for Indian professionals and students to settle there. In contrast, both the US and Canada have expanded pathways for skilled workers and students, driving the increase.

Analysts say the trend is likely to continue, with North America's share of the global Indian diaspora expected to grow further in the coming years. The data underscores the region's growing importance as a hub for Indian talent and investment.
