California Lawmakers Recognize Diwali 2026 to Honor Indian Americans

The resolution, introduced by Assembly Members Darshana Patel and Ash Kalra, passed unanimously in the Assembly Rules Committee within a week of its August 13 introduction and advanced to the floor on August 20. Patel noted that lawmakers were recognizing Diwali early because the Legislature will be out of session in November when the festival is celebrated.

The measure describes Diwali, or Deepavali, as meaning 'a row of lamps' and highlights traditions such as lighting candles, oil lanterns, and clay lamps to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. It also emphasizes themes of good over evil, positivity, humility, and kindness, and notes that for many, the festival marks the beginning of the New Year.

HR 137 builds on California's 2025 designation of Diwali as an official state holiday through Assembly Bill 268, authored by Kalra. The new resolution formally acknowledges that milestone and encourages all Californians to participate in this year's celebrations.

Patel expressed pride in presenting the resolution on the Assembly Floor, saying it ensures the cultural tradition 'has its moment' before the session closes. She extended wishes for 'a joyful and bright Festival of Lights this fall.'
