The scheme, launched by the Government of India, invites applications from eminent Indian-origin academics working abroad. Selected scholars will be appointed as Prime Minister’s Research Chairs at institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management.

Each chair will receive funding for a period of three years, with the possibility of extension for two more years. The support covers research expenses, travel, and a monthly honorarium, enabling the chairholder to spend time at the host institution.

The initiative aims to foster long-term collaboration between overseas Indian scholars and domestic faculty. Chairholders will mentor early-career researchers, co-supervise doctoral students, and lead joint research projects in areas of national priority.

Applications are to be submitted online through the scheme’s dedicated portal. A selection committee, chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser, will review proposals based on the scholar’s track record and the proposed research plan.

The scheme is part of broader efforts to leverage the expertise of the Indian diaspora for the country’s academic and scientific advancement.
