The Inyo County Sheriff's Office confirmed the discovery of Mubayi's body, which was located in the remote alpine region of the Sierra Nevada. Authorities said they do not suspect foul play at this time, though an official cause of death has not been released.
Mubayi, a PhD student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, was reported missing after he failed to return from a solo hiking trip. Search and rescue teams, including helicopter units and ground crews, scoured the rugged terrain for days before locating his remains.
The Big Pine Lakes area is known for its challenging trails and sudden weather changes, which can pose risks even to experienced hikers. Mubayi's family has been notified, and the university has offered counseling services to students and staff affected by the loss.
A native of India, Mubayi was pursuing a doctorate in materials science at UCSB. His academic advisor described him as a promising researcher with a passion for his field. The Indian consulate in San Francisco is assisting his family with repatriation arrangements.
