Indian Scholar Found Dead After California Hike Disappearance

Mubayi's body was discovered in the Inyo National Forest on the evening of August 3, according to the student publication Daily Nexus. He had last contacted his family at around 8:30 p.m. on August 1, sharing his GPS coordinates from the trail. When he failed to return to his designated outpost or check in again, his family reported him missing, triggering a search by Inyo County Search and Rescue and the California Highway Patrol.

His sibling posted on Reddit asking for help, describing Mubayi as 6 feet 3 inches, 170 pounds, with dark hair, and noting his last update came from coordinates 37.10942° N, 118.52428° W at 8:37 p.m. PST. The post mentioned he was in the Big Pine Lakes area of the Eastern Sierra, specifically around Agassiz Col.

Investigators have not released details on the cause of death, but said there is no indication of foul play. The circumstances remain under investigation.

Mubayi was born and raised in Hong Kong and described by his family as a fairly experienced hiker. In a biography for Illini 4000, a student-led nonprofit, he said his mother introduced him to hiking and tennis "pretty much as soon as I learned how to walk." He also noted he was an experienced cyclist.

He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022, where he worked as an undergraduate research assistant and teaching assistant. At UCSB, his research focused on using bacteria and biological methods to break down plant waste and plastics, aiming to develop sustainable alternatives to petroleum, according to his LinkedIn profile.
