The bank has named Sanjay Bhandari as head of artificial intelligence and data strategy, succeeding Heitsenrether, who retired after a 30-year career. Bhandari, previously chief data officer, will oversee the firm's AI roadmap and coordinate with business units to accelerate adoption of generative AI tools.

In a parallel move, JPMorgan appointed Manpreet Singh as chief data and analytics officer, a new role focused on integrating data platforms across wholesale and consumer banking. Singh, who joined the bank in 2019 from McKinsey, will report to Bhandari and work with technology teams to standardize data governance.

The leadership changes reflect a strategic pivot from building foundational AI infrastructure to deploying models that directly support trading, risk management, and customer service. The bank has invested heavily in AI, including its proprietary LLM suite, and now aims to embed these tools into daily operations across its 240,000-strong workforce.

Heitsenrether, who led JPMorgan's AI efforts since 2019, is credited with establishing the firm's data and analytics backbone. Her retirement marks the end of an era, but insiders say the new structure is designed to maintain momentum and ensure AI initiatives are aligned with revenue-generating priorities.

The appointments come as JPMorgan faces intensifying competition from fintech rivals and peers like Goldman Sachs, which have also restructured AI leadership. The bank has not disclosed specific performance targets for the new team, but executives have signaled that AI will play a central role in its $17 billion annual technology budget.
