San Marcos Hindus Create Cultural Sanctuary

The temple, located on a quiet residential street, began as a small gathering of families who wanted a place to celebrate festivals and practice their faith away from the crowded cities of Houston and Dallas. Over time, the group grew, and in 2019 they purchased a former church building to convert into a permanent home.

Sri Sanatan Dham now hosts weekly Sunday prayers, monthly cultural programs, and major Hindu festivals such as Diwali, Holi, and Navratri. The temple also runs language classes in Hindi and Telugu for children, helping the younger generation stay connected to their heritage.

The founders, many of whom are professors at Texas State University, say the temple fills a void in the region, where Hindus previously had to drive more than an hour for darshan. The sanctuary has become a gathering point for the growing Indian community in San Marcos and nearby towns.

Looking ahead, the temple committee plans to expand the building to include a larger prayer hall and a community kitchen. They are also working to establish a formal nonprofit status to support future activities and outreach.
