The White House announced the initiative during a ceremony attended by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins. The program streamlines the process for veterans to obtain commercial driver's licenses by recognizing military driving experience and offering expedited skills testing.
Under the program, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Veterans Affairs will work with state agencies to waive certain written test requirements for veterans with relevant military training. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will also provide grants to cover training costs for eligible veterans.
The initiative includes a dedicated online portal where veterans can find information on licensing, job openings, and employer partnerships. Several major trucking companies have signed on as partners, committing to hire qualified veterans who complete the program.
Officials said the program addresses both a shortage of truck drivers and high unemployment among veterans. The White House estimates that thousands of veterans could enter the trucking workforce within the first year.
