Indian American Professor Saumitra Jha Named Falling Walls Finalist

Jha, an associate professor of political economy at Stanford Graduate School of Business, was selected for his work titled "Breaking through the Ethnic Growth Trap." The research shows that when people from different ethnic groups participate in joint financial ventures, such as lending and trading, they build trust and reduce violence.

The study draws on historical and contemporary data from regions with deep ethnic divisions. It finds that economic interdependence, especially through credit and business partnerships, can break cycles of poverty and conflict. Jha argues that policies promoting inclusive markets may be more effective than aid or top-down peacebuilding.

The Falling Walls Foundation, based in Berlin, honors breakthrough research across disciplines. Finalists are chosen for work that addresses global challenges. Jha is one of several social scientists recognized this year.

Jha's previous work has examined the long-term effects of historical institutions on development. His current project extends this by focusing on how financial integration can serve as a tool for peace in fragile states.

The winners will be announced at the Falling Walls conference in November 2026, where Jha will present his findings alongside other finalists.
