Air India Names Tewolde Gebremariam CEO Succeeding Campbell Wilson

Gebremariam, who led Ethiopian Airlines for over a decade, will take charge as Air India's CEO and Managing Director on October 1. The Tata Group-owned carrier said his appointment aligns with its long-term strategy to strengthen operations and expand its international footprint.

Wilson, who has been at the helm since mid-2022, oversaw the airline's initial turnaround after the Tata Group regained control. He will remain with the company until September 30 to ensure a smooth handover, according to an Air India statement.

Gebremariam's tenure at Ethiopian Airlines was marked by rapid growth, making it one of Africa's largest and most profitable carriers. His experience in building a global network is expected to help Air India as it modernizes its fleet and enhances customer experience.

The leadership change comes as Air India continues a major transformation, including a $70 billion order for new aircraft and plans to expand routes across the US, Europe, and Asia. The airline has been working to improve on-time performance and service quality to compete with global rivals.
