Air India Names Tewolde Gebremariam CEO Succeeding Campbell Wilson

Air India has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, the former long-time chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. He will take charge on October 1, the airline announced on Tuesday.

Gebremariam succeeds Campbell Wilson, who is stepping down on September 30 after leading the carrier for nearly three years. Wilson, a former Singapore Airlines executive, was brought in to oversee Air India's privatization and initial turnaround efforts.

The leadership change comes as Air India, owned by the Tata Group, embarks on a major fleet expansion and service overhaul. The airline has placed orders for hundreds of new aircraft and is investing in cabin upgrades and digital services to compete with global carriers.

Gebremariam led Ethiopian Airlines for over a decade, during which it became Africa's largest and most profitable carrier. He is expected to apply his experience in building a strong network and operational efficiency to Air India's next phase of growth.

The airline said Gebremariam's appointment is effective immediately, with Wilson remaining until the end of September to ensure a smooth transition.
