Fremont Voted Happiest U.S. City Again, Despite High Bay Area Costs

The city's top ranking stems from strong scores in physical health, low depression rates, and high median incomes, according to the personal finance website's annual report. Fremont outpaced other Bay Area cities like San Francisco and San Jose, which ranked lower despite similar cost-of-living pressures.

WalletHub's methodology weighs 30 metrics across emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community. Fremont's high household incomes and low unemployment contributed significantly to its score, offsetting the region's steep housing costs.

However, some economists and urban planners argue the ranking overemphasizes income and underplays factors like commute times and social connections. They note that Fremont's affordability challenges, including a median home price above $1.3 million, are not fully captured in the survey.

City officials welcomed the recognition but acknowledged ongoing efforts to address housing and transportation. Mayor Lily Mei said in a statement that the city is 'working to ensure Fremont remains a place where families can thrive,' while pointing to new transit-oriented developments.

The report also ranked other California cities in the top 20, including San Jose and Irvine, but Fremont's streak remains unmatched since the survey began in 2016.
