Karandeep Singh, a 24-year-old temporary resident from India, has avoided jail time after pleading guilty to sexual assault in British Columbia. The assault occurred in June 2024 in Prince George, B.C.

Singh, who has been living in Canada since 2023, received a sentence of 170 days of house arrest followed by 18 months of probation. The sentence was handed down by a B.C. provincial court judge.

The terms of the house arrest require Singh to remain at his residence at all times unless granted permission for specific activities such as work, medical appointments, or court appearances. He must also comply with standard probation conditions, including reporting to a probation officer and abstaining from alcohol and drugs.

As a temporary resident, Singh's immigration status in Canada may be affected by the conviction. Under Canadian law, a serious criminal offense can lead to deportation proceedings. It is unclear whether immigration authorities will seek to remove Singh from the country.
