Arvind Raman, Indian-Origin, Steps In After AI Security Chief Chris Fall Resigns

Raman, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University, will lead the center's efforts to develop voluntary AI standards and promote international cooperation. His appointment was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Monday.

Fall, who had been named director in April 2026, resigned in July citing personal reasons. His brief tenure was marked by early-stage work on AI safety guidelines and industry outreach.

The center, established under the National Institute of Standards and Technology, aims to coordinate U.S. participation in global AI standardization. Raman brings experience in robotics and manufacturing, having previously advised federal agencies on technology policy.

In a statement, Raman said he would prioritize 'practical, consensus-driven standards' to support innovation while addressing public safety. He is expected to serve until a permanent director is named.
