Arvind Raman, Indian-Origin, Steps In After AI Security Chief Chris Fall Resigns

Raman, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University, will lead the center while a permanent replacement is sought. His appointment was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Commerce, which oversees the center.

Fall, who had been named to the post in April 2026, resigned after three months. No official reason was given for his departure, which took effect on July 15, 2026.

The Center for AI Standards and Innovation was established in 2025 to coordinate federal efforts in developing voluntary AI standards and to engage with international bodies. Raman's background includes research in robotics and manufacturing, with a focus on AI applications in industrial settings.

In a brief statement, Raman said he would prioritize maintaining the center's ongoing projects and ensuring continuity in its international engagements. He has not indicated whether he will seek the permanent position.
