Indian Family Receives HOA Warning Over Traditional Housewarming Décor

The Deora family, who recently moved into a home in a Houston suburb, received a notice from their homeowners association on Tuesday, giving them 48 hours to remove the festive items or incur daily penalties of $100.

The decorations, including marigold garlands and a toran, were hung at the entrance of their home as part of the Griha Pravesh ceremony, a Hindu ritual that welcomes prosperity into a new dwelling. The ceremony took place on a weekend, and the family planned to take down the items after a week, as is customary.

The HOA's letter stated that the decorations violated community guidelines that prohibit exterior displays lasting more than 72 hours. The family, who requested anonymity to avoid further conflict, said they were unaware of the rule and have since removed the items to avoid escalating fines.

Local community leaders have expressed concern that such enforcement may disproportionately affect minority homeowners who observe cultural traditions. They have urged the HOA to review its policies to accommodate diverse practices.

The HOA board has not issued a public statement, but a spokesperson for the management company said the rule is applied uniformly and exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis.
