Indian Family Receives HOA Warning Over Traditional Housewarming Décor

The Deora family, who recently purchased a home in a suburban Houston neighborhood, held a Griha Pravesh ceremony last month to bless their new residence. As part of the Hindu tradition, they adorned the house with marigold garlands and mango leaves, which they left in place for several days.

A few days after the ceremony, the family received a violation notice from their homeowners association. The letter stated that the decorations had been up longer than the HOA's 24-hour limit for temporary displays and ordered their immediate removal or the family would face fines starting at $50 per day.

The Deoras said they were unaware of the rule and had intended to take down the decorations within a week, as is customary in their tradition. They have since removed the items and are appealing the violation, arguing that the HOA's policy does not accommodate religious or cultural practices.

The HOA board has not commented publicly on the appeal. The incident has sparked discussion among local Indian community groups about the need for greater cultural awareness in neighborhood regulations.
