India Surpasses UK as Australia’s Top Source of Skilled Migrants

New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that as of 2023, more than 970,000 people born in India were living in Australia, edging past the roughly 960,000 British-born residents. The change ends a centuries-long dominance of British-born migrants in the country's population.

The shift has been driven by a sharp rise in skilled migration from India over the past two decades, particularly in fields like information technology, engineering, and healthcare. Australia's points-based visa system has favored younger, educated applicants, a profile that aligns with many Indian professionals.

Indian migration to Australia has also been boosted by growing educational ties, with Indian students becoming the largest cohort of international enrollees. Many of these graduates transition to permanent residency through post-study work pathways.

The milestone is expected to influence policy discussions in both countries, as Australia looks to manage population growth and India seeks to strengthen its diaspora engagement. The Indian community in Australia has become increasingly visible in politics, business, and culture, with several members elected to parliament in recent years.

Demographers note that the trend is likely to continue, given Australia's ongoing demand for skilled labor and India's large, young workforce. The two countries are also negotiating a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement, which could further boost migration and trade.
