Sarwat, who directs the Energy Power and Sustainability Lab at FIU's College of Engineering and Computing, was recognized for advancing research that strengthens the local workforce and attracts industry investment. The award, given by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, highlights faculty whose work directly impacts the region's economic growth.

His research focuses on smart grid technology, renewable energy integration, and grid cybersecurity, areas that align with South Florida's push to become a hub for clean energy innovation. Sarwat has also collaborated with local utilities and tech companies, helping to bridge academic findings with practical applications.

In a statement, Sarwat said the award reflects the collaborative efforts of his students and colleagues, and he hopes it will draw more attention to FIU's energy programs. He has been with FIU since 2012 and has secured millions in federal and state funding for his projects.

The award will be presented at the alliance's annual meeting in early 2026. Sarwat is the third FIU faculty member to receive the honor in the past five years.
