Mount Sinai Appoints Acclaimed Cardiologist Dr. Samin K. Sharma as Clinical Cardiology Chief

Dr. Sharma, who has performed more than 40,000 coronary interventions during his career, will oversee the day-to-day clinical activities of the cardiology division at Mount Sinai Heart. His appointment was announced this week by the health system.

A specialist in complex, high-risk procedures, Dr. Sharma has pioneered techniques for treating blocked arteries, including rotational atherectomy and the use of intravascular imaging. He has also led numerous clinical trials evaluating new stent technologies and antiplatelet therapies.

In his new role, Dr. Sharma will work to standardize care protocols across Mount Sinai's network, with an emphasis on improving outcomes for patients with severe coronary artery disease. He will also continue to serve as director of interventional cardiovascular research at the institution.

Dr. Sharma, who has been on the Mount Sinai faculty for over three decades, has received multiple awards for his contributions to interventional cardiology. He is a past president of the American College of Cardiology's New York chapter.

The appointment comes as Mount Sinai Heart seeks to expand its services and maintain its position as a leading cardiovascular care center. Dr. Sharma succeeds Dr. Valentin Fuster, who will remain as director of Mount Sinai Heart and focus on research and global health initiatives.
