Vin Gopal and NJ Lawmakers Celebrate New Beach Safety Law

The celebration took place at the Asbury Park boardwalk, where Senator Gopal was joined by Assembly members, mayors, and beach patrol representatives to highlight the new law's provisions. SR72, which passed both chambers without opposition, requires all beach patrols to adopt standardized safety protocols, including mandatory training for lifeguards in first aid and water rescue techniques.

The law also extends workplace protections to seasonal beach employees, granting them access to workers' compensation and anti-retaliation safeguards. Previously, many seasonal workers were classified as independent contractors, leaving them without these benefits. Under SR72, employers must provide clear written contracts outlining hours, pay, and safety expectations.

Senator Gopal, who sponsored the resolution, said the law closes longstanding gaps in beach safety oversight. 'Every family that visits our shore deserves to know that lifeguards are trained to the same high standard, and every lifeguard deserves to work in a safe and fair environment,' he said during the ceremony.

Local officials praised the collaborative effort, noting that the law was shaped with input from beach patrols, municipal leaders, and labor advocates. The new requirements take effect at the start of the 2027 summer season, giving municipalities time to implement the training and contract provisions.

The event concluded with a demonstration by the Asbury Park beach patrol, showcasing the new rescue techniques that will become standard under the law. Gopal said he hopes the legislation will serve as a model for other states with coastal communities.
