Vin Gopal and NJ Lawmakers Celebrate New Beach Safety Law

The celebration took place at the Bradley Beach boardwalk, where Senator Gopal was joined by Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling and Assemblywoman Joann Downey, both representing the 11th District, along with local officials and beach patrol members. The resolution, which passed unanimously in both the Senate and Assembly, establishes a framework for standardized safety protocols and workplace protections for lifeguards and other beach personnel.

Under SR72, beaches across the state will be required to implement uniform safety training programs and ensure that all beach employees have access to proper equipment and insurance coverage. The measure also mandates the creation of a reporting system for beach-related incidents, aiming to improve response times and data collection for future safety improvements.

Gopal, who sponsored the resolution, emphasized the importance of protecting both beachgoers and the workers who keep them safe. 'This is about making sure that every lifeguard and beach worker has the support they need to do their job effectively,' he said during the ceremony. 'It's a commonsense step that will benefit every community along our coast.'

The resolution was developed in collaboration with the New Jersey Beach Patrol Association and local municipal officials, who provided input on the challenges faced by beach workers. The new standards are expected to be implemented by the start of the 2027 summer season, giving municipalities time to adjust their training and equipment protocols.

Local officials praised the bipartisan effort, noting that the resolution received support from both sides of the aisle. 'This is a great example of what we can accomplish when we work together,' said Bradley Beach Mayor Gary Engelstad. 'It's a win for public safety and a win for the people who keep our beaches safe.'
