OCI Card 2026: e-OCI Shift, Eligibility & Application Guide

The shift to the e-OCI card means new applicants will no longer receive the traditional physical booklet. Instead, they will get a downloadable digital credential that can be printed or stored electronically. The government says this change removes the need for postal delivery and reduces the risk of loss or damage.

Eligibility criteria remain unchanged. People of Indian origin, including those who have held an Indian passport at any time or whose parents or grandparents were Indian citizens, can apply. The new system also covers spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders, subject to existing rules.

The application process is now entirely online. Applicants must fill the form on the official OCI portal, upload required documents, pay the fee, and schedule an appointment at the nearest Indian mission or consulate for biometric verification. After approval, the e-OCI card is issued digitally, and applicants can download it from the portal.

Existing OCI cardholders are not affected by the change. Their current booklets remain valid, and they can continue to use them for travel and other purposes. However, those who need a reissue or a new card will receive the digital version.

The e-OCI card is expected to cut processing times significantly. Previously, applicants often waited weeks for the physical booklet to be printed and mailed. With the digital format, the card is available immediately after approval, making the process faster for the millions of Indians living abroad.
